World War II Memorial Pays Tribute to ‘The Greatest Generation’

They’ve been called “The Greatest Generation”, and now we have a memorial to commemorate them. Located on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., the new memorial honors the 16 million men and women who served in our nation’s Armed Forces during World War II. On April 29th of this year, the long-awaited monument opened to the public. Four days of activities will mark the occasion, with the actual dedication ceremony taking place on Saturday, May 29. For more information on the memorial and associated events, go to this Web site: www.wwiimemorial.com.

In addition, the Library of Congress will send staff around the mall during those events to gather as many short personal histories of veterans as possible for its archives. The project has been dubbed the Veterans History Project and can be viewed on-line at www.loc.gov/folklife/vets. Memorial Day weekend looks to be an eventful few days, and I encourage you to come and visit this unique memorial to those who helped shape our country.

Tennesseans Pull Duty in War on Terror

At the moment, the Tennessee National Guard has about 1,500 young men and women serving their country in the Middle East now, and will send about 2,800 more in June of this year. To date, about 3,000 troops from the Tennessee National Guard have been activated in the War on Terror. Locally, the longest deployment is that of the 269th MP Co. out of Murfreesboro, which has been serving in Iraq since December 6th, 2002.

Troops have been sent from Smyrna, Lebanon, Cookeville and Murfreesboro. The next large deployment will be that of the 278th division, specifically the 3rd Battalion from Cookeville. They will pull out on June 11th. We are grateful for these brave young people who are giving their lives to fight for our country.
